Overview
The 6-day Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m) from the northern side, near the Kenyan border. Known for its gentle slopes, low traffic, and dry conditions, it is an excellent choice for those seeking a quieter and less crowded ascent. The route is also ideal during the rainy season, as it receives less rainfall than the southern routes. Although it has a gradual ascent, the shorter duration provides less time for acclimatization, making proper preparation essential.
The trek begins at Rongai Gate (1,950m), passing through dense rainforest to Simba Camp (2,600m) on the first day. On day two, trekkers ascend into moorland, reaching Second Cave (3,450m) before continuing to Kikelewa Camp (3,600m). Day three involves a steeper climb to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m), located near the dramatic Mawenzi Peak. On day four, the trail crosses the Saddle, a vast alpine desert, leading to Kibo Hut (4,703m), the base for the summit attempt.
The summit push begins at midnight on day five, with climbers trekking through the steep, rocky slopes to Gilman’s Point (5,685m), then continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). After a brief celebration, trekkers descend to Horombo Hut (3,720m). The final day involves a long descent through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate (1,860m), where climbers receive their summit certificates.
The best months to climb are January–March and June–October, offering the most stable weather. While the Rongai Route is less physically demanding than the Machame or Umbwe routes, the shorter acclimatization period means a good level of fitness and altitude awareness are crucial for a successful summit.
