Elevation: 1,830m (6,004ft) to 2,700m (8,858ft)

Hiking Distance: 8 km (5 miles)

Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

After breakfast, you’ll depart from Moshi for a scenic 1-hour drive to the Marangu Gate. Upon arrival, you will complete the necessary registration formalities. With the paperwork out of the way, your trek begins through the lush, verdant rainforest. The trail to Mandara Hut is a steady uphill hike, offering the opportunity to spot monkeys and other fascinating wildlife along the way.

Upon arrival at Mandara Hut, you’ll be welcomed with a warm meal and accommodation in comfortable A-frame huts. In the evening, you have the option to embark on a short acclimatization hike to Maundi Crater. This optional hike provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and helps your body adjust to the altitude, setting you up for success in the days ahead.

Overnight: Mandara Hut (2,700m)

Elevation: 2,700m (8,858ft) to 3,720m (12,205ft)

Hiking Distance: 12 km (7.5 miles)

Hiking Time: 5-6 hours

Begin your day with a hearty breakfast at Mandara Hut before setting off on your trek. The journey starts by continuing through the lush rainforest, where you may encounter unique flora and fauna. As you ascend, you’ll transition into the moorland zone, where the vegetation gradually changes, giving way to a more rugged and open landscape.

The 12 km (7.5 miles) trek to Horombo Hut takes about 5-6 hours and offers stunning views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks along the way. Take your time to soak in the breathtaking scenery and capture memorable photographs.

Upon arrival at Horombo Hut, you’ll be welcomed with a warm meal, providing much-needed nourishment and comfort. The accommodations at Horombo Hut consist of comfortable A-frame huts, allowing you to relax and acclimate to the higher altitude.

In the evening, your guide will conduct a briefing for the next day’s trek, ensuring you are well-prepared for the challenges ahead. This informative session will cover important details about the upcoming journey and provide valuable tips for a successful ascent.

Overnight: Horombo Hut (3,720m)

  • Elevation: 3,720m (12,205ft) to 4,703m (15,430ft)
  • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
  • Distance: 10km (6.2mi)

Today’s trek takes you across the expansive lunar desert known as the “Saddle,” a barren and rugged landscape that stretches between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Although the terrain is stark and desolate, the views of the towering peaks on either side are truly awe-inspiring. The hike will take approximately 6 hours, giving you ample time to take in the vastness of the landscape. Upon arriving at Kibo Hut, you’ll settle in for an early dinner and rest, conserving your energy for the upcoming summit attempt. In the evening, your guide will provide a detailed briefing to prepare you for the final ascent, which will begin just before midnight.

For the summit attempt, you’ll start the ascent at midnight, aiming to reach the summit by sunrise. Reaching Uhuru Peak will be a momentous achievement, with panoramic views stretching across the African continent. Once you’ve taken in the breathtaking sunrise from the highest point in Africa, you’ll begin your descent back to Kibo Hut for a well-deserved rest.

 Overnight at Kibo Hut.

Elevation: 4,700m (15,430ft) to 5,895m (19,341ft) and down to 3,720m (12,205ft)

Hiking Distance: 22 km (13.7 miles)

Hiking Time: 8-12 hours

Around midnight, you’ll be awakened to begin the final ascent toward Uhuru Peak. The journey to Gillman’s Point, at 5,685 meters (18,652 feet), is steep and strenuous, typically taking around six hours of steady climbing. This challenging section will test your endurance, but your guide will offer support and encouragement along the way.

Once you reach Gillman’s Point, you’ll take a brief rest before continuing to traverse the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. The trek from Gillman’s Point to Uhuru Peak is less steep but still demanding due to the high altitude. If the weather cooperates, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking sunrise over the continent, making all the effort worthwhile.

After celebrating your incredible achievement at the summit and taking in the stunning views, you’ll begin your descent to Kibo Hut. Here, you’ll have a short rest and enjoy a well-deserved meal. Once you’ve regained some energy, you’ll continue the descent to Horombo Hut, where you will spend the night.

Overnight: Horombo Hut (3,720m)

 Elevation: 3,720m (12,205ft) to 1,870m (6,135ft)

Hiking Time: 5-7 hours

Distance: 20km (12.4mi)

After breakfast, you’ll start your descent through the diverse moorland and lush rainforest zones, making your way back to Marangu Gate. As you trek downward, take in the final views of the landscape and reflect on your accomplishment.

Upon reaching the gate, our team will be there waiting for you with a medal. You’ll be presented with your well-earned summit certificate as a testament to your achievement. We will continue celebrating and take photos with the Great Time Experience (GTE) team. From there, you’ll be driven back to your hotel in Moshi, where a hot meal, a refreshing shower, and a comfortable bed await.
