Overview
The 5-day Marangu Route, often called the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the only Kilimanjaro route that offers hut accommodations, making it a popular choice for climbers seeking a more comfortable trek. It is considered the easiest path to the summit due to its gradual slopes, but the shorter duration allows less time for acclimatization, reducing the overall success rate compared to longer routes. The trek begins at Marangu Gate (1,860m) and passes through lush rainforests before reaching Mandara Hut (2,700m) on the first day. On day two, climbers ascend through moorlands to Horombo Hut (3,720m), with breathtaking views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The third day involves a steep climb to Kibo Hut (4,703m), crossing the Saddle, a barren alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo. The summit attempt begins at midnight on day four, with climbers pushing through the challenging Gilman’s Point (5,685m) before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After a short celebration, trekkers descend to Horombo Hut for the night. The final day involves a long descent back through the rainforest to Marangu Gate, where climbers receive their summit certificates. The best months to climb are January–March and June–October, and while the Marangu Route is less physically demanding, proper acclimatization and fitness preparation are crucial for a successful summit.
